Online Dating Profiles? Not Exactly the Truth

Post by The Sexpert on 30 July 2010

Sorting fact from fiction is something online love hunters need to think about according to a survey conducted by the free social networking and dating website OKCupid. One of the site’s founders Christian Rudder writes: “with our behind the scenes perspective, we’re able to shed some light on some typical claims and the likely realities behind them.”
Most dating sites ask you to upload a recent picture, right? Well OKCupid discovered that the more attractive the picture, the more likely it is to be out-of-date. 1 in 5 average-looking photos is at least a year old and of the “hottest” photos nearly 1 in 5 is at least two years old. Older people also upload older photos.
In their profiles most men added a couple of inches to their height  The goal, it seems, is to get as close to six feet  as possible, literally stretching for the that psychological benchmark. Women also exaggerated their height but not the same degree as men.
However shorter women got more attention with a 5’ 4” woman getting 60 more contacts each year that a six-footer. When OKCupid compared sex partners by height they found that, up to a point, taller people actually do have more sex.
People are 20% poorer than they say they are, according to the survey, and 80% of self-indentified bisexuals were only interested in one gender. “In many online situations,” writes Rudder, self-misrepresentation is totally harmless. Who cares if your Halo 3 avatar is taller than you are in real life? But in on-line dating, the whole goal is to eventually meet other people in person, creating a false impression is a whole different deal.”
